Buy African Carbon Credits: The Independent Buyer's Guide
You can buy verified African carbon credits from Verra- and Gold Standard-registered projects via registries and brokers — the four routes, ranked from direct developer sales to Africa-focused marketplaces, are below.
African carbon credits come from some of the most verified project types in the voluntary market: clean-cooking stoves, REDD+ forest protection, soil carbon on smallholder farms, and mangrove "blue carbon" restoration. This guide ranks where buyers can source them, which registries protect the purchase, and how Kenya — Africa's most active carbon-market jurisdiction — regulates exports.
Last updated: November 2026. Figures and regulatory details reflect publicly reported information as of that date; verify current rules with the relevant registry or regulator before transacting.
Where to buy African carbon credits: ranked sources
Ranked by transparency, registry backing and buyer protections. Our methodology explains the criteria.
Projects on Verra (VCS), Gold Standard and Plan Vivo registries can issue credits that you retire in your name. Buying direct from a listed developer (for example Kenya's BURN Manufacturing or Wildlife Works) gives the clearest provenance, but usually requires volume commitments of thousands of tonnes.
Firms such as Climate Impact Partners assemble credits from multiple vetted projects into portfolios for corporate buyers. You pay a margin for curation, diligence and retirement paperwork — sensible for first-time buyers.
Newer platforms focused on African supply — Hummingbirds, which raised $59 million in February 2026 to scale carbon-credit sales in Kenya and across Africa, is one example — shorten the chain between village project and corporate buyer.
Airlines meeting ICAO's CORSIA scheme buy credits from CORSIA-eligible programmes. If your purchase is for aviation compliance, check the eligibility list before anything else.
What African carbon credits finance
| Project type | Typical registry | Buyer appeal |
|---|---|---|
| Clean cooking (efficient and electric stoves) | Gold Standard, Verra | Strong health and gender story; large African supply |
| REDD+ avoided deforestation | Verra (VCS + CCB) | Large volumes; Kasigau Corridor in Kenya was the first VCS REDD+ project |
| Soil carbon (regenerative agriculture) | Verra | Keeps farmland productive; Boomitra's East Africa grassland project was Verra-registered in 2025 |
| Mangrove / blue carbon | Plan Vivo | Small volumes, high community co-benefit; Kenya's Mikoko Pamoja is the best-known example |
| Agroforestry | Verra, Gold Standard | Long-lived removals with smallholder income |
The Kenya rule book in one paragraph
Kenya launched a national carbon registry in February 2026 and published a carbon-market rule book in August 2026 that caps the overseas sale of Kenyan credits (reported at around 10 million tonnes CO₂e per year). A domestic carbon exchange is planned to open in early 2027. If you buy Kenyan credits, confirm the retirement happens on a recognised registry and that the project holds the required Kenyan approvals under the new rule book.
