Methodology: How We Rank Sources

This site ranks and recommends only what can be checked in public records. Our criteria, in order of weight:

Last updated: November 2026. Figures and regulatory details reflect publicly reported information as of that date; verify current rules with the relevant registry or regulator before transacting.

1. Registry traceability (knockout criterion)

Every project or seller we list must have credits traceable to issuance and retirement records on a recognised registry — Verra (VCS), Gold Standard, Plan Vivo, or a CORSIA-eligible programme. No registry record, no listing.

2. Regulatory standing

For Kenyan projects, current approval under Kenya's carbon-market rule book (published August 2026) and listing in the national registry launched in February 2026. We also track registry actions such as suspensions and reinstatements — and say so when they happened.

3. Track record and tenure

Years of documented operation. Wildlife Works' Kasigau Corridor project, for example, has issued VCS REDD+ credits since 2011; Vi Agroforestry's Kenya work spans decades.

4. Benefit sharing

Documented, public arrangements for sharing revenue with host communities. Projects with credible community governance rank higher; projects with credible public controversies are flagged, not hidden.

5. Measurement quality

Preference for projects using measured methodologies — for example Gold Standard's metered and measured methodology for electric cooking, first applied in Africa by UpEnergy in 2025, or satellite-and-AI soil measurement as used by Boomitra.
