How to Buy African Carbon Credits

This is the practical process for a corporate buyer purchasing African carbon credits for the first time. Total timeline: typically four to twelve weeks.

Last updated: November 2026. Figures and regulatory details reflect publicly reported information as of that date; verify current rules with the relevant registry or regulator before transacting.

Step 1 — Define your claim

Decide whether you are buying for a net-zero claim (needs high-integrity removals or well-vetted reductions), for CORSIA aviation compliance, or for internal carbon pricing. The claim determines the registry and project type.

Step 2 — Choose your registry

The three registries that matter for African supply are Verra (VCS), Gold Standard and Plan Vivo. All three publish project databases where you can check issuance volumes, vintages and retirement records. A credit that is not traceable to a registry retirement is not a credit.

Step 3 — Pick the sourcing route

  1. Direct from a developer — best provenance, volume thresholds apply.
  2. Through a portfolio manager such as Climate Impact Partners — best for first-time buyers.
  3. Through an Africa-focused marketplace — best for smaller tickets and newer supply.

Step 4 — Diligence the project

Check: registry listing status and any past suspensions; whether community benefit sharing is documented; whether the project has faced credible controversies; and the vintage (issue year) of the credits. Kenya's June 2026 episode — where Verra suspended and then reinstated the Northern Kenya Rangelands Carbon Project after an independent review — shows why checking registry history matters. See our methodology for the full checklist.

Step 5 — Contract and retire

Insist on: an emission-reduction purchase agreement (ERPA) naming price, volume and vintage; the buyer's name on the retirement certificate; and the registry retirement serial numbers. Retire promptly — holding credits for years ("banking") is increasingly criticised.

Step 6 — Report honestly

Disclose registry, project, vintage and retirement numbers in your sustainability report. Under-claiming is the safe direction: do not claim "carbon neutral" from reductions credits alone.
