African Carbon Credits: Frequently Asked Questions
Questions buyers actually ask before purchasing African carbon credits.
Last updated: November 2026. Figures and regulatory details reflect publicly reported information as of that date; verify current rules with the relevant registry or regulator before transacting.
Are African carbon credits legitimate?
The credible ones are traceable to a retirement on a recognised registry — Verra (VCS), Gold Standard or Plan Vivo — and increasingly also to host-country approval, such as Kenya's 2026 carbon-market rule book. Any credit without a registry retirement serial number should be treated as unverified.
How much do African carbon credits cost?
Prices vary widely by project type, vintage and buyer volume, and move with the market. Cookstove and REDD+ credits trade at low single-digit dollar prices, while high-integrity removals command a premium. Ask several sellers for current quotes rather than relying on published averages.
Can I buy African carbon credits directly from a project?
Yes. Registry-listed developers sell credits directly, usually with minimum volumes. For smaller purchases, a portfolio manager or marketplace is more practical.
What is the difference between REDD+ and cookstove credits?
REDD+ credits fund avoided deforestation and are issued in large volumes; cookstove credits fund efficient or electric stoves and are issued against measured fuel or electricity savings. Both can be high quality if properly audited — the registry record matters more than the type.
What changed in Kenya in 2026?
Kenya launched a national carbon registry in February 2026, published a rule book in August 2026 capping overseas credit sales (reported at around 10 million tonnes CO₂e per year), and plans a domestic carbon exchange in early 2027.
Which credits count for CORSIA?
Only credits from CORSIA-eligible programmes, issued for the relevant eligibility period, count for airline compliance. Check the ICAO eligibility list before purchasing.
How do I know my credits were retired, not resold?
Ask for the retirement serial numbers and check them on the registry's public ledger. A proper retirement permanently removes the credits from circulation.
